FreakinAsheville.com

Hello, Old Friends…

Before Zuckerberg invented surveillance capitalism and turned your aunt’s recipes into a data points, there was FreakinAsheville.com.

Built by James Gaffney, Lane Reid, and Douglas Madaras, three freaks in Asheville with a healthy disdain for normalcy, the site was a car crash of local community, chaos and creativity. It was Facebook before Facebook, with more nudity, better bands and significantly fewer baby pictures.

FreakinAsheville wasn’t just a website. It was a pixelated cathedral of the strange. It hosted forums, rants, raves, and the occasional spiritual breakdown, all tied together by a shared love of Asheville’s offbeat soul.

There were street parties. Real ones. Loud ones. Sometimes legal. FreakinAsheville spilled off the screen and into alleyways and parking lots and pizza joints – part social network, part secret society, largely public nuisance.

Then, as all great weird things must, it faded. The internet got cleaner. The algorithms came. And FreakinAsheville went dark, buried under a tide of influencer filters and social media monoculture and careers and aaaaaall that.

What I’d Like to Do…

This is Jimbo talking…

I’d like to see FreakinAsheville return to a bit of what I personally loved so much about it – the no-holds-barred message boards. There was great discussion, weird shit, some meanness and a lot of very real Asheville shenanigans. That should return.

When? Who knows. I’m a busy man – but if anyone out there would like to help, I’m all ears.

What You Can Do…

Since I’m Not Above Taking Money Over Work We Did Almost 20 Years Ago…

Buy some merch. It’s good merch. It’s print-on-demand and I make (literally) pennies on each piece. I’m not looking to get rich – but every little bit helps.
